The short answer: the Festa da Praia Maravilha is Odeceixe's beach festival, held every year over two days in mid-September on the sand of Praia de Odeceixe itself. It is free, it is for all ages, and it is organised by the Câmara Municipal de Aljezur together with the Junta de Freguesia de Odeceixe. It exists to celebrate one date. In 2012, the beach was voted one of the 7 Maravilhas, Praias de Portugal, the seven wonder beaches of the country, in the cliff-beach category. The 2026 edition takes place on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 September, with David Antunes as the headline act.
We live 3 km from Odeceixe and 5 km from the beach, so this is not a festival we read about in a listings magazine. It is the weekend when the valley road fills up in the late afternoon, when you can hear the bass from the clifftop, and when the village gets its beach back from the summer and throws a party on it. What the Festa da Praia Maravilha is, and why it exists
Most beach festivals celebrate summer in general. This one celebrates a specific decision. In 2012, a national public vote chose the 7 Maravilhas, Praias de Portugal, across several categories of beach. Praia de Odeceixe won in the category of praias de arribas, cliff beaches, and the reason given is the thing anyone who has stood at the clifftop viewpoint understands in a second: the balance between the river and the sea. The Seixe curls around one side of the sand, calm, shallow and green. The Atlantic breaks on the other. One beach, two personalities, framed by dark schist cliffs.
The municipality of Aljezur and the parish of Odeceixe decided that the title deserved more than a plaque, and the Festa da Praia Maravilha was born. The name is literal: the festival of the wonder beach. It is held on the beach, not in the village, which is the detail that makes it special. You are not watching a concert in a square and then driving to the coast the next day. You are on the sand, with the estuary behind the stage and the last of the light on the water.
Over the years it has settled into its place in the calendar as the last big party of the summer on this stretch of coast. Mid-September is deliberate. The August crowds have gone home, the water is still warm from three months of sun, and the people on the beach are the people who live here, plus the visitors who know that September is the month the Costa Vicentina is at its best.

How the festival unfolds, year after year
The programme changes from one edition to the next and the organisers publish it a few weeks ahead, so treat what follows as the shape of the thing rather than a timetable. But the shape is recognisable, and once you have been to one edition you know how to plan the next.
Late afternoon: the sunset session
The festival opens gently. A DJ plays on the sand as the sun drops towards the headland, and this is the part I would not miss even if I skipped everything else. People arrive straight from the water with sand on their feet, families spread towels near the stage, and the light does the work. The sunset at Praia de Odeceixe is famous in its own right, and on festival night it comes with a soundtrack.
Evening: concerts on the sand
Once it is dark, the concerts begin. Each edition brings a headline act, usually a well-known Portuguese name, and other performances around it. The stage is on the beach, the entry is free, and the audience is a mix you rarely get at a ticketed festival: surfers, grandparents, teenagers from the village, walkers who have just finished a stage of the Fishermen's Trail, and a few of our guests who came for the beach and stayed for the music.
The baile: the traditional dance
A baile is the Portuguese village dance, the kind of evening that every parish festival in the country still has at its heart. Popular music, couples dancing, children running between the tables, and nobody caring whether you know the steps. At the Festa da Praia Maravilha it sits alongside the concerts, and it is the part that reminds you this is a local celebration first and a festival second. If you only ever go to the headline concert, you have missed the point a little.
Saturday morning: the bodyboard contest
Saturday starts on the water. A stage of the bodyboard circuit is held on the Atlantic side of the beach on the Saturday morning, and it is a good way to see the other face of Praia de Odeceixe. The river side is where you swim with small children; the ocean side is where the waves arrive. Spectators watch from the sand, the heats run through the morning, and by the time the contest wraps up the beach is filling for the second afternoon.
Daytime, some years: kayaks and surf lessons
Some editions have added daytime activities: kayak outings on the estuary, where the river is calm enough for a first paddle, and surf initiations for beginners. These are not guaranteed every year, so check the programme when it is published rather than counting on them. When they happen, they are the easiest way to spend a whole day at the festival with children and still have them awake for the sunset set.

Getting to the beach on festival nights
Praia de Odeceixe sits at the end of the valley road, about 3 km downstream from the village and 5 km from our houses. On an ordinary September evening you park by the beach entrance without thinking about it. On festival evenings, the car parks near the sand and the spaces along the approach road fill early, and the road itself is narrow, so arriving late by car means a long walk back from wherever you managed to stop.
Three ways to handle it. The first is to arrive early, in time for the sunset session, and stay put: you get the parking, the best of the light, and the whole evening. The second is to walk down from the village along the valley road. It is flat, it follows the river, and it takes roughly forty minutes at an easy pace. Walking back after the concert, under a sky with no light pollution to speak of, is one of the quiet pleasures of the weekend; bring a torch. The third, if you are staying near the village, is a taxi or a lift, so that nobody has to think about the drive.
Two small things worth knowing before you go down. Once the sun is gone, the breeze off the Atlantic turns cool even after a hot day, so bring a sweater for the concerts. And if you plan to walk back up the valley, bring a torch: the road is easy, but it is unlit, and the stars are better appreciated when you are not squinting at the tarmac.
Which brings me to the honest advice. The festival ends late, the roads out of Odeceixe are country roads with no lighting, and the nearest towns of any size are a good half hour away. Sleeping close by is not a luxury on festival night, it is what makes the evening work. Being five minutes from the beach means you can go down for the sunset set, come back for dinner, and go down again for the concert, without ever queuing for a parking space or driving the N120 at one in the morning.
September on the Costa Vicentina: the reason to make a stay of it
If you are travelling for the festival, do not come for two nights. September is the month we would send our own friends to the Costa Vicentina. The Atlantic has spent the summer warming up and is as comfortable as it gets here. The air is warm without the July heat, the light is lower and kinder, and the beaches that were full a fortnight earlier are quiet again. Praia de Odeceixe on a September weekday morning is the beach the 2012 vote was about, with almost nobody on it.
Around the festival weekend, the rest of the region is at its best too. The Fishermen's Trail passes 2 km from our door and the September temperatures are ideal for walking it. Aljezur, 12 km south, has its castle, its river and its sweet potatoes. The beaches to the north, towards Zambujeira do Mar, are empty enough to have to yourself. Where to sleep for the festival
Our houses are 3 km from Odeceixe and 5 km from the beach, in the quiet between the village and the coast. Casa T3 sleeps six in three en-suite bedrooms at 199 EUR per night. The Loft sleeps four in two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, at 149 EUR per night, and it is the right size for couples who want the festival weekend without a house built for six. There is no minimum stay, so a festival weekend on its own is welcome, and a week around it is even better.
